6 Things Every Bride Should Do Before Putting On Her Wedding Dress

Your wedding day is finally here. After months of planning, the moment you have been waiting for has arrived. Before you step into that dress, slow down for just a few minutes. These six simple things can save you from a stressful situation and make sure everything goes perfectly from the very first moment you see yourself in the mirror.

1. Wash Your Hands

This sounds obvious but most brides skip it and regret it. Makeup, lotion, and oils on your hands can transfer directly onto your dress the moment you touch it. One real bride learned this the hard way when mascara on her hand left a dark streak across the front of her gown as she was putting it on. It takes thirty seconds to wash your hands and it can save your dress from a stain that cannot be undone.

2. Eat and Drink Something

Do not skip eating just because you are nervous or because you are worried about your dress fitting. You have a long day ahead and an empty stomach will catch up with you fast, especially during photos, the ceremony, and hours of standing and greeting guests.

Eat a proper meal before the dress goes on. Once you are in your gown, stick to clear liquids only and keep food to a minimum until after the photos are done. The last thing you want is a spill on your dress before you even make it to the altar.

3. Use the Bathroom

This one is more important than it sounds. Going to the bathroom in a big wedding dress is genuinely difficult and takes time. Between the ceremony, photos, and greeting everyone, it can be a long time before you get another chance to slip away.

Go before the dress goes on so you are not uncomfortable or distracted during the most important parts of your day.

4. Put On the Right Undergarments

The undergarments you choose matter more than most brides realize. The wrong ones can show lines and seams through your dress, affect how it fits, and make you feel uncomfortable all day long.

Figure out what works best with your specific dress style before the wedding day so there are no last minute surprises. The right undergarments will keep everything smooth and in place, help you feel confident, and make sure you can dance and move freely all night without thinking twice about it.

5. Put Your Shoes On First

Whether your dress goes over your head or you step into it, put your shoes on before the dress goes on. It is much easier to do it this way and it gets you fully dressed faster.

When it is time to actually put the dress on, have someone help you, especially if you are stepping into it. One wrong step and you could accidentally step on the hem and damage the dress before you have even left the room.

6. Finish Your Makeup First

Get your makeup fully done before you touch the dress. Powder, foundation, and liquid products can all stain white fabric, and once that happens there is very little you can do about it.

Doing your makeup first also means you will not have to lean over a sink or deal with anything messy while wearing the gown. By the time the dress goes on, your look should already be complete and you should be ready to go.

These six steps take maybe fifteen minutes total but they make a real difference. A little preparation right before you put on the dress means you walk out of that room feeling calm, comfortable, and completely ready for the day ahead.
