33 Father Daughter Dance Songs That Won’t Make You Cringe

Choosing the perfect song for a father-daughter dance can be a bit challenging. You’ll want a tune that is heartfelt and emotional, without veering into overly romantic territory (which many slow love songs tend to do). Take Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” for instance – while it’s a catchy song, the lyrics might not be the most suitable for a father-daughter dance.

Sometimes I get overwhelmed thinking about making love in the green grass behind the stadium with you, my brown eyed girl. You are my brown eyed girl.

Tom Petty’s song “Wildflowers” is also a popular choice that fits in a similar category. It’s a good song, but the lyrics might be a bit awkward for a father-daughter dance since the song is actually about letting go of an ex. (But personally, I think it’s okay.)

Escape, seek out a romantic partner. Escape, follow your heart. You deserve the most secure protection. You belong in that home eventually.

However, there are numerous excellent options available for father-daughter dance songs that will hopefully not cause any discomfort when listening to them.

Below, you’ll find some of my favorite father-daughter dance songs. Many of them are classics that you’ve probably seen on other lists, like Louis Armstrong and Fleetwood Mac. However, there are also some hidden gems. For instance, Sheryl Crow’s rendition of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns n’ Roses is a popular choice among brides, but I personally prefer Luna’s more alternative cover. Additionally, there are plenty of fantastic songs from artists such as Billy Joel, Ben Folds, Amos Lee, Heartland, Darius Rucker, and the Zac Brown Band that didn’t make the cut for our list, but they’re still excellent options.

These songs are definitely our favorites. If you’re thinking about giving them a listen, you can find our reviews and the lyrics that make them special down below.

“Sweet Child of Mine” by Luna

I really like this cover of the song. It has a sweet and indie vibe, and it’s more upbeat than the original version (imagine dancing awkwardly to the guitar solo with your dad). By the way, the Vitamin String Quartet also has a great rendition of this song that would be perfect for walking down the aisle.

She has eyes that resemble the color of the sky on a clear day, making it seem like they were never touched by sadness. I wouldn’t want to see any sadness reflected in those eyes.

“Here Comes the Sun” by Nina Simone

I absolutely adore this song. Anything Nina Simone sings is just captivating to me. Although I chose “Feeling Good” for my walk down the aisle, this song might just be my favorite by Nina. Originally written by George Harrison in 1969 for The Beatles’ Abbey Road album, this song could also be a great choice for a first dance at your wedding, whether it’s you and your partner or a mother-son dance.

The lyrics about finding joy again after a long time away, expressed as “Little darling/ The smiles returning to the faces/ Little darling/ It seems like years since it’s been here”, are deeply touching.

“Nothing Can Change This Love” by Sam Cooke

This song is perfect for a father-daughter dance. Its lyrics are sweet, the tempo is slow for easy dancing, and it’s not excessively used at weddings.

The lyrics convey a deep sentiment, with the singer expressing unwavering love for their partner. They emphasize that even if their partner wants to leave and explore, they will always be welcomed back with open arms because the love they have for them will never waver.

“What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong

Yes, this song is a popular choice for wedding playlists. It has earned its spot on many people’s lists of favorite wedding songs for a reason.

I listen to the sound of babies crying, I see them growing and learning more than I could ever know. It makes me appreciate the world and think about how wonderful it truly is.

“That’s How Strong My Love Is” by Otis Redding

I believe the lyrics of this song could be seen as fitting for a father and daughter dance at a wedding, despite its romantic undertones. You have the option of selecting either the rendition by Otis Redding or The Rolling Stones.

The lyrics express a sentiment of devotion and reassurance, comparing the singer’s love to the sun and themselves to the moon. They promise to always be there, even when the sun sets, to show that their presence is constant.

“Landslide” by Fleetwod Mac

This song is a popular choice for weddings, and it’s too beautiful to leave off the list. Despite being quite melancholic, it’s still a fantastic track that should be given some thought.

I have always been afraid of change because my life has revolved around you. However, as time passes, everyone grows older including children and myself.

“Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra

“The Way You Look Tonight” may be a more popular choice for a father/daughter wedding song compared to this one, but there’s just something special about this particular song that really speaks to me. I mentioned earlier that this was the song I chose to dance to with my dad, and it was a big factor in my decision to have a large wedding ceremony. Ever since I first heard this song as a child, it has stayed with me, and I knew that I wanted to share this moment with my dad. While it may not fit the traditional mold of a father/daughter wedding song with its slightly romantic lyrics, what matters most is the personal connection and meaning it holds for me.

I really love the lyrics of this song that talk about flying to the moon and playing with the stars. It’s such a beautiful image to imagine seeing what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars.

“You Were Always On My Mind” by Willie Nelson

There aren’t many wedding song lists that address tricky situations. Perhaps your relationship with your parent(s) has had its challenges, but you’re both present in each other’s lives now and want to recognize that. This song always brings tears to my eyes and could be a fitting choice if one or both of you want to convey that despite past difficulties, you are now there for each other.

Lyrics with Depth: I apologize for making you feel unimportant. I didn’t realize how much I neglected you, as you were always on my mind.

“Shout” by The Isley Brothers

Alright, let’s move on from the emotional songs! This song is perfect for those of you looking to do a lively choreographed dance with your dad, and maybe even have the DJ invite your guests to join in. I thought about using Sam and Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Comin'” as well, but I thought it might be a bit odd to dance to with your dad, if you catch my drift (even though it’s one of my all-time favorite songs!). “Shout” has pretty tame lyrics and is sure to bring some laughter to the crowd.

I remember clearly when you were just nine years old. I admit, I was infatuated with you, deep down in my soul.

“My Girl” by The Temptations

This song is one of the most popular on the list for a reason – it’s a timeless classic that everyone will recognize.

These lyrics tell us about finding happiness during tough times. The singer mentions feeling sunshine even on a cloudy day and warmth in the cold. The mention of May, a pleasant month, adds to the feeling of joy. The lyrics express how the singer’s girl brings a special kind of happiness that is hard to describe.

“Just Fishin’” by Trace Adkins

She believes we are simply fishing by the river, throwing back fish we could cook, drowning worms, and passing the time. She’s not considering the bigger picture at the moment, but I’m sure this memory will be significant to her. She sees this as just a fishing trip.

The lyrics of this song are deep and personal. They talk about a father watching his daughter in the water, reflecting on how he always seems to lose whenever they argue.

“I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack

I wish that when you’re standing by the ocean, you still feel a sense of awe and humility. When something in your life ends, I hope that something new and exciting begins. Please, don’t give up on hope and take a chance on believing. And when faced with a decision to either passively watch or actively participate, I hope you choose to dance. Just dance.

“Cheek to Cheek” by Ella Fitzgerald

I really enjoy going fishing, whether it’s in a river or creek. But dancing cheek to cheek brings me even more joy than fishing does.

“One Call Away” by Charlie Puth

The lyrics of this song talk about being someone’s hero, ready to help them no matter what. Superman might be known for saving the day, but the singer believes they can do just as much. They promise to be there whenever they are needed, just one call away.

Now that we have discussed our choices, let’s dive into the fundamentals…

How to Choose the Right Father Daughter Dance Song

It can be challenging to find the perfect song for a father-daughter dance, but with some effort, it can definitely be done. The crucial thing is to choose a song that both of you feel comfortable dancing to. Share your song ideas with your father to get his input. He might already have a favorite song that could work well (and it may have that cool retro vibe).

Think of the “vibe” you and your dad are going for.

Are you and your dad known for being silly, but are you planning to be more emotional during your first dance? Or are you thinking of dancing a polka instead? Consider the emotion you want to convey with your dad. Do you want everyone to be moved to tears? Or do you want the dance to start the party with a feeling of fun and excitement? Are you also looking to create a special moment for your mom? The song you pick will establish the mood.

Think of special moments between you and your dad.

Was “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle his go-to lullaby for you at bedtime? Remember those days of twirling around the living room to Ray Charles? Perhaps you both have a deep appreciation for the sea, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, whipping up delicious meals, or that classic country twang. Maybe there was an annual fishing excursion that holds a special place in your heart from your childhood. These memories can guide your selections when choosing songs. If you have that connection, now’s the moment to revel in that cherished bond of forever being daddy’s little girl!

But be open to out-of-the-box ideas.

Claire Swinarski, a writer, came across the ideal song while browsing through her mom’s music collection in the car. The song “Just Fishin'” by Trace Adkins resonated with her because fishing held precious memories of her dad. The song captures the essence of creating memories while a father fishes with his daughter. Being upbeat, not overly sentimental, and a country song – both Claire and her dad enjoyed it. What’s even better is that it’s easy to dance to. Claire suggested the song to her dad, and he enthusiastically agreed with the choice.

As I was looking for a song for the father-daughter dance at my wedding, I remembered a scene from the movie “Once Around” that I adored growing up. In the movie, Holly Hunter’s character marries Richard Dreyfuss, and at their wedding, her father (portrayed by Danny Aiello) serenades them with Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon.” That moment always resonated with me. I had always imagined dancing with my dad to that song, and we finally did at my wedding.

Have fun!

The father daughter dance is meant to honor the significance of your dad in your life. You could try taking dance lessons or practicing in the kitchen ahead of the special occasion. If you don’t have that kind of bond with your dad (or if he’s not around), you could dance with your uncle, godfather, brother, or another important figure in your life. Some brides even opt to dance with their moms! Families come in various forms, and that’s something worth celebrating.

When choosing the songs for your father-daughter dance at your wedding reception, it’s crucial to keep in mind that the dance itself only lasts a few minutes. Although it holds significance in your life, it doesn’t define the entirety of your relationship with your father. So, even if you feel anxious about it, rest assured that it will turn out to be a beautiful moment that you will cherish for a lifetime.
